Thank you to all my "long lost cousins" who have been so receptive when I called them.
A very special thank you to Sharon Kohn who has spent countless hours researching the Kohn family. She is responsible for nearly all the pictures on the site. Without her, this family history would not have been possible.
Thank you to Sharon Kohn, Allan Kohn, Howard Kohn, and Randi Katz (daughter of Sharon Kohn) for their financial support of research efforts into the Kohn family.
Finally, thank you to all who have contributed and continue to correspond with me to add, change, and update information. You make me proud to be a KOHN.
Thank you to Barbara Schwartz Karp for her patience and candor through a long interview. Maurice Schwartz was also quite helpful.
Thank you to my grandparents, Abraham "Albert" "Schwabie" Schwartz and Freda "Fritzie" Harr Schwartz, just for being. It is in part my relationship with you that inspires this entire undertaking.
Thanks to Kay and Wally Levine who are terrific at identifying old photographs. Thanks to my grandmother, Fanny Kohn Simon, and her sister, Rose Kohn Simon, who indulged me with genealogical interviews back when I was 15.
Thanks to Monroe Waxman who never complains about the barrage of e-mailed inquiries he gets from me and for his financial support of this project. Thanks to Ruth Berger (daughter of Carrie Waxman Schwartz) and her husband Mo Berger for their time and for the old pictures. Thanks to all the rest of my extended Waxman family, all of whom have been thrilled to be "found" cousins. It's been great meeting all of you.
Thank you to my wife, Yafitte Bendory, for sharing my excitement in this project and for her patience and indulgence. :-)
Thank you to everyone at JewishGen.org who have offered advice, guidance, and assistance along the way. The Newark Public Library has proven an invaluable resource for information on Newark and Essex County, NJ. The Jewish Cemetery Project for Newark has also been a tremendous aid. Thanks to many volunteers at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness for their help with various research requests.
Please note that genealogical research is not free. Hundreds of dollars and countless hours have been spent assembling the information you are (hopefully) enjoying on these pages. Costs include membership fees in genealogical organizations to gain access to their records, family tree software, fees charged by government agencies for records, and fees charged by professional genealogical research companies who have done research for us both in the United States and abroad.
All financial contributions will be allocated toward the cost of researching your blood relatives and their spouses. An accounting of research costs will be provided to contributors on request. Just click the link below to contribute using PayPal. Note that you can use your credit card.
If you would prefer to contribute time to your family's research efforts, please contact me at david@bendory.com. I can allocate small chunks of research to you based on the library resources available to you. You can also volunteer to obtain government records (birth, marriage, death, etc.) which cost a nominal fee of $5-$10 depending on the document and state.
Both volunteer time and financial support are tremendously valuable to these research efforts.
Whether you contribute or not, you are welcome to enjoy the fruits of these efforts. I do genealogy because it is fun, exciting, and interesting. If it so happens that others benefit from or enjoy my investment into my hobby, that's a wonderful fringe benefit. If my enthusiasm is contagious enough to get you to join in the effort, all the better!
